Town of Abingdon
This drawing, along with many others, have been removed from the Town of Abingdon's 2027 Comprehensive Plan . it was first part of the 2007 Abingdon Comprehensive Plan. This map, previously found on page 37, demonstrates the proposed parcel for rezoning as "High Visibility". The following text refering to "Open Space Opportunities 2027" has been carried over into the 2013 updated comprehensive plan currently found on the Town's website but the map, despite being specifically refered to, has been left blank. A reason for omitting this and other maps from 2007 and 2013 is not contained in the 2013 updated version :
"Residents of Abingdon value the scenic views and natural open spaces within and around the town. Visitors passing through on I-81 also experience wonderful vistas of the open farmlands and rolling landscape that surround the town. These scenic qualities enhance the recreational amenities and contribute to the overall quality of life and ambiance of Abingdon. Consequently, it is important to identify those special areas that should be conserved and preserved for the greater benefit of the community. As part of the planning update, viewsheds from I-81 were identified using Geopgraphic Information System (GIS) data. These viewsheds are depicted on the map on the following page (below). The topography of the town's perimeter along I-81 not only provides a pleasant cinematic experince for visitors and residents using the road, it buffers noice and traffic and contains pollutants, while separating the town settlement from the busy transportation corridor. Consequently, it is important that this landscape be carefully considered where new development is proposed."
